Why Instagram giveaways work
A prize, a strong image and a few simple instructions are enough to get people moving. They follow the account, like the post, tag a friend and share it to their story. Entrants already know the format, and you can set one up in an afternoon.
That is worth keeping. This guide doesn't ask you to replace your Instagram giveaway. It shows how to add a page behind it so the giveaway does more once the comments stop.
What happens when it ends
You may finish with hundreds of new followers and thousands of comments. Your audience is still spread across platforms you don't control, though. Your posts compete with everything else in the feed, your reach can change from one month to the next, and you have no direct way to tell these people about your next launch.
| Compare | Instagram post alone | Post plus a Tokei page |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Follow, like, tag and share, all inside Instagram | Email signup plus optional actions on any platform |
| Audience | Followers on one platform | Entrants you can export and contact, with consent |
| Reach | Set by the Instagram algorithm | Set by you, through email and every channel you link |
| Sharing | Story shares and tags | A personal referral link for each entrant |
| Winner | Picked by hand from comments | Drawn at random from eligible entrants |

Keep the Instagram giveaway, expand the campaign
Your Instagram post becomes the front door. It still shows the prize and gets people interested. The Tokei page is where they enter, so the entry goes further than a comment can. The Instagram Engagement template gives you that page, already set up for Instagram.
- 1Publish your usual giveaway post, with the prize image and the instructions you always use.
- 2Link to your Tokei page from your bio and a story link sticker, and say so in the caption.
- 3Entrants register with an email address, then earn points for optional actions on other channels.
Instagram captions don't make links clickable, so the bio link and the story sticker do the work. Repeat the link whenever someone asks how to enter.
Why add Tokei to a tag-a-friend giveaway?
Tokei doesn't replace a follow, like and tag giveaway. It sits behind it and fixes the parts that are hard to do inside Instagram. Your followers still see the same post and the same prize, but they enter on a page that keeps count.
| Instagram mechanic | On Instagram alone | With a Tokei page |
|---|---|---|
| Tag-a-friend | Tagged friends see the post, but most never enter | Every entrant gets a personal referral link to share |
| Follow, like, share | Entries live in Instagram, so you count them by hand | Each action earns points on one page, with a leaderboard |
| Picking a winner | Scrolling comments, with duplicates and throwaway accounts | A random draw from eligible entrants, with fraud flags and email confirmation |
| After the giveaway | Followers you can only reach through the feed | Emails you can export or sync, with consent |
The tag-a-friend step still does its job of spreading the post. The referral link adds a second route, and it rewards the people who share most.
Give people more ways to enter
On the page, you choose the actions. Keep one step required, usually the email address, and make the rest optional so each one earns points without blocking anyone from entering.
| Channel | Actions you can add | What it does for you |
|---|---|---|
| Follow your account, or recommend someone on a post | Keeps the audience you already have | |
| TikTok | Follow your account, or visit a video | Brings Instagram fans to a second channel |
| YouTube | Visit your channel | Sends people to long-form content |
| Visit your page or a post | Reaches an older audience | |
| X | Follow your account, repost or engage with a post | Adds a public, searchable channel |
| Register to enter and get updates | The one channel you control | |
| Referrals | Invite friends through a personal link | Turns each entrant into a promoter |
Available actions and verification options depend on the platform and your Tokei setup. The actions documentation lists them all, and the Instagram Engagement template is a ready-made starting point.
What about verification?
Tokei doesn't check follows against Instagram. A follow action can ask for the entrant's handle, and each submission shows up for you to review. Reject one and the points come back off. For a deeper look at fraud settings, see the security settings in our giveaway guide.

A real example: a Halloween iPhone giveaway
We found a Halloween iPhone giveaway on Instagram that shows the format well. The prize image says "To enter" over four steps, and the caption repeats them. The giveaway is open to Europe only, the winner is announced on Halloween, and after four days the post had around 2,500 likes.

It's a good post. The steps are short and the prize is easy to want. One line in the caption shows where it gets hard, though. Every tag in a separate comment is a new entry, so the more people join in, the more comments someone has to count.
| Step in the post | What you get on Instagram alone | What a Tokei page adds |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Follow the page | A follower count, with no list of who did it | Keep it as an action worth points, and ask for the handle so you can review it |
| 2. Like the post | A like count | Keep it on Instagram, where it takes one tap |
| 3. Tag a friend, one comment per tag | Every comment is an entry, so someone has to count them | A referral link, so a friend who enters is credited to the person who shared |
| 4. Share to your story and tag the page | Stories expire, and nobody tracks who posted one | Keep it in the post, and add a Tokei action for people who want more points |
The same giveaway with a Tokei page
Keep the post exactly as it is and add a line to the caption pointing to your Tokei link. Start from the Instagram Engagement template and change the prize and rules. Entrants register with an email address, then earn points. These point values are an illustration, so set your own to match your goal.
| Action | Points | Why it's there |
|---|---|---|
| Register with an email address | Required | Entry and your email list |
| Follow on Instagram | 3 points | Keeps the audience you came from |
| Follow on TikTok | 3 points | Opens a second channel |
| Visit your YouTube channel | 2 points | Long-form content |
| Invite a friend with a referral link | 10 points | New entrants without ad spend |
The Europe-only rule and the Halloween closing date move onto the page as well, so they're written down once in your official rules instead of living in a caption people may not read.
Build an audience you can reach again
Followers are valuable, but the platform owns the connection. An email address is different. With Tokei you can export your entrants or sync them to a supported email marketing service, then use the list to announce your next giveaway, share a product launch or invite people to a community.
Collect email openly
Say what people are signing up for. Get marketing consent where the law requires it, and don't present entering a giveaway as consent to unrelated marketing. A separate, optional checkbox keeps the two apart.
Build the campaign around your goal
A dedicated page lets you drop the one-size-fits-all instructions. Choose the actions that serve what you want from this giveaway.
| If you are | Reward these actions | You end up with |
|---|---|---|
| Product launch | Email registrations and referrals | Launch-day buyers |
| Pre-launch audience | Email sign-ups before launch day, then sharing | A list ready on day one |
| Gaming community | Discord, Twitch and YouTube actions | Members who join and stay |
| Creator brand | TikTok and other channels beside Instagram | Followers on more than one platform |
Templates such as TikTok Growth, Discord Community and Collect Email List set these up for you.
Stay compliant
Instagram has its own promotion guidelines, including rules on tagging. Read them before you launch. Say in your post and your official rules that the giveaway isn't run or endorsed by Instagram, and publish your eligibility terms, closing date and how you'll pick the winner. Our compliance section covers the wider rules. None of this is legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run an Instagram giveaway and a Tokei giveaway at the same time?
Yes. Post the giveaway on Instagram as usual and link to your Tokei page in your bio or on a story link sticker. The Instagram post brings people in, and the Tokei page handles entries, points, referrals and the draw.
Do entrants need an Instagram account to enter?
Not on the Tokei page. The usual required step is an email address, and Instagram actions are optional. You can make an Instagram action worth points without making it a condition of entry.
Does Tokei check that someone followed my Instagram account?
No. Tokei doesn't check follows against Instagram. Follow actions can ask for the entrant's handle, and each submission is available for you to review before the draw.
How do I get people from my Instagram post to my giveaway page?
Instagram captions don't make links clickable, so use the link in your bio and a link sticker on your stories. Mention the link in the caption, and repeat it when people comment or send a message asking how to enter.
How do I pick the winner?
Draw at random from eligible entrants, using the method your rules describe. Tokei's Select Winner draw picks at random and can filter entrants by minimum points, confirmed email, account age and fraud flags.
Can I email everyone who enters?
Only where they have agreed to hear from you. Explain what people are signing up for, add a marketing consent checkbox where the law requires one, and don't present entering the giveaway as consent to unrelated marketing. This isn't legal advice, so check the rules where your entrants live.
